Chateau Maison Blanche, Les Piliers, Saint Emilion, organic wine, red, 2009
Les Piliers are the pillars to the left and to the right at the entrance to the Château Maison Blanche, and this wine can also be seen as the introduction to the organic wines of this house. It is made from young vines whose roots are not yet very deep and whose grapes are not yet very expressive and thus less intense but which do produce wonderful fruity organic wines which can be drunk soon. This "small" Saint Emilion gives an indication of the enjoyment it will provide in 2 to 3 years. If you are not impatient, I suggest that you do not open this organic wine until 2011, or even 2015.

Winemaking
1/3 of the grapes are hand-picked, the other 2/3 by harvesters, and the entire crop of grapes is then sorted on a conveyor belt before it is put into large fermentation tanks for maceration and fermentation. This process takes 2 to 4 weeks for this organic wine, depending on the varietal and the quality of the crop of grapes, without temperature control, without any micro-oxygenation, without enzymes, must concentration, wood chips, this is a completely traditional and natural vinification. The organic wine is aged in oak barrels which have been used 1 to 3 times before as well as in large wooden casks. Since 2004, the bottling has been done without collage (fining with egg whites) and without filtration.

Château Maison Blanche
This is one of the most beautiful wine-growing estates in the region. It was built in the 19th century from white stone in the middle of a park-like piece of land, in which the wine cellars with one of the largest barrique cellars in the entire Bordeaux region are located. The vineyards cover 32 hectares, the soil is calciferous and loamy with a sandstone substratum. The vines are 50% Merlot and 50 % Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 45 years (in 2009), and the average yield per hectare is 50 hl. The switch to controlled ecological viniculture started in the years 2005/2006. The current owners, the Despagne family, not only has its roots in Saint Emilion but has been involved with the wines of this prestigious viniculture community for more than 300 years. In 1972, they took over the estate with vineyards in the appellation Montagne Saint Emilion, Saint Emilion and Pomerol from Louis Rapin. They switched to controlled ecological viniculture starting in 2005/2006.
