TENUTA SAN VITO
In 1982, the Tenuta San Vito was the first wine-growing estate in Tuscany to switch to organic production, and we were its first German customer. It is remarkably large, measuring 150 hectares, approximately 30 hectares of which contain vines and 20 hectares olive trees. The rest is forest, which surrounds the entire estate and sets the boundaries to other vineyards. Not far from Florence, it is secluded and far away from noise and traffic.

The Origins of the Tenuta San Vito
The recent history of Tenuta San Vito began with the purchase of the property by Roberto Drighi and the planting of vines and olive trees in 1960. His main focus pertaining to this property was not on agricutural aspects but rather the possibility of hunting on the land belonging to this estate and in the forests surrounding it. It was his daughter Laura who around 1980 realized the negative effects that the chemicals used in agriculture were having on the environment and the quality of the products. It took a lot of persuasive power to get her father's agreement to switch the winery to organic viticulture. I remember a walk through the vineyards of the Tenuta San Vito I took with Roberto Drighi, during which he asked me what our customers thought of the organic wines produced by Tenuta San Vito. When I told him they loved the wines, but a lot of them regarded these wines as a luxury due to their comparably high prices, he replied that to him they were a luxury as well, due to the high production costs and low yields. Laura Drighi however was firmly committed to the idea of organic agriculture, and in the years to follow she was able to consolidate her position with the help of a competent staff and to achieve financial success. During our years of working together, our original business relationship developed into a friendship with Laura Drighi and her family, and this friendship is still alive today. After Laura retired from the company management, her nephew, Roberto Drighi's grandson, took charge of this. Thus Neri Gazulli and his Norwegian wife are the third generation of this family responsible for the continuity of the chosen path and for the future of this beautiful winery close to Montelupo.

The conditions for continuing to produce good organic wines at reasonable prices have been created due to the almost complete replanting of the vineyards with the Sangiovese clones as well as small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay vines. A new and highly modern harvester, acquired recently, has made it possible to reduce the costs of harvesting the grapes manually with no loss of quality. Its operation makes it possible to adjust the specific gravity of a ripe grape so that no unripe or foul grapes are harvested. Since this has been in use, it is only for the two top wines that the grapes are hand picked in several rounds of harvesting. In order to make sure that really perfect organic wines are produced from these grapes, the famous oenologist Attilio Pagli and his assistant were hired to plan and to regulate the wine production from the delivery of the grapes up to the bottling.

The construction of a new wine cellar and equipping this cellar with modern machines – a destemming machine, a wine press which prevents the grapes from damage, stainless steel tanks and concrete tanks as well as new oak barrels which hold 4,000 and 5,000 liters give reason to expect perfect organic wines in the future.
