Cesani, Chianti Colli Senesi, organic wine

enlarge Cesani, Chianti Colli Senesi, organic wine, 2009 San Gimignano, with its celebrated towers, is one of the most frequently visited places in Tuscany and it is thus not surprising that the Vernaccia di San Gimignona is popular locally and all over the world. Although we had been looking for a good Vernaccia for some time, which we in fact found here, we were so enthusiastic about the red wines produced here that we definitely had to add them to our product line. This deep crimson Chianti is quite a strong wine which has a great deal of fruit and freshness. We tasted it shortly after it had been bottled and although in our opinion it was still somewhat hazy it was a very pleasant, clear and clean wine with an agreeable taste. Serve at a temperature of 15-16 degrees centigrade with typical Tuscan dishes, a strong-flavored vegetarian meal or a medium-flavored cheese. Winemaking The slopes facing southeast, with their typically indigenous vines (autochthonal) have a loamy, sandy soil. The harvest is done manually starting at the beginning of October, depending on the weather. Since the vineyards are very close to the winery, there is no danger of premature oxidation. Following this, the grapes are separated immediately from their clusters and crushed. The grape mash is fermented in concrete tanks (insulate better than stainless steel) and then pressed. The wine ages in barriques which have already been used once before for another wine. This is not done to save money, but because this method ensures that the influence of the wood is not quite as strong as it is on new barriques and thus the original fruity aromas of the grapes are reflected more strongly in the wine. The wine is bottled after a slight filtration in October of the following year. Organic Wine Estate Cesani Cesani is a small family wine estate in Pancole. The father is in charge of the agricultural part, Laeticia, the one daughter, of the winemaking in the cellar and Marieluisa, the other daughter, of marketing the wines and of the agritourism business. The mother, almost invisible in the background, does the housework and cooking, making sure that her family and the guests do not go hungry, serving them homemade jam and cake for breakfast. The winery, which has 19 hectares of vineyards, is a few kilometeres northwest of San Gimignano. Although according to Marieluisa Cesani the vines have never been treated with chemicals other than sulfur and copper allowed in organic wine, they can only be sold as organic wines after there has been an official and supervised switch to organic viticulture.
